In plain words
115.5 per 100 people
What it is. Mobile subscriptions count active SIM cards registered with operators and divide them by the population, then scale to 100 people. Because one person can hold several SIMs, such as a personal line and a work or data line, the figure can pass 100 without every resident being connected. Fixed-line phones and unused dormant SIMs are handled differently across operators, and the count says nothing about the quality or speed of the service.
Higher is better. A higher figure is better because it shows more people can reach calls, messaging, mobile money and online services. The latest reading of 115.5 per 100 people in 2024 is up from 111.6 per 100 people a year earlier, a rise of 3.5%. It is also the highest point since 2015, with the lowest at 103.4 per 100 people in 2020. The series has therefore recovered and moved past its earlier range.
Why it matters. At 115.5 per 100 people, Algeria has more subscriptions than residents, so most households have at least one mobile line and many people carry more than one. For firms, that is a wide base of customers reachable by phone, and for the state it is a platform for delivering digital services. Operators now gain growth mainly from extra lines and better data use per subscriber.
