In plain words
116.6 per 100 people
What it is. Mobile subscriptions count active SIM cards registered with operators, divided by the population and scaled to 100 people. Because one person can hold several SIMs, for example to switch between networks for cheaper calls or better coverage, the figure can exceed 100 and does not equal the number of people with a phone. It also leaves out how often a line is used, what it is used for and whether the connection carries data.
Higher is better. More subscriptions generally mean more people can reach phone services, mobile money and information, so a higher figure is better. The latest figure, 116.6 per 100 people for 2024, is up from 116.2 a year earlier, a rise of 0.43 per 100 people or 0.37%. That is the highest level since 2015, when the figure stood at 76.9, its lowest in the window. Growth has slowed sharply and the series now rises only slightly from year to year.
Why it matters. A figure above 100 means SIM ownership has spread widely across Burkina Faso, and many people hold more than one line. Households can use mobile phones for calls, transfers and market information, and firms can reach customers by phone. Further gains in access now depend less on the number of SIMs and more on coverage in remote areas and the quality of the connection.
