In plain words
125.9 per 100 people
What it is. Mobile subscriptions count active SIM cards registered with operators, divided by the population and scaled to 100 people. One person can hold several SIMs, for example to use different networks or to take advantage of cheaper tariffs, so the figure can pass 100 even when not everyone has a phone. It measures access to a connection and says nothing about data use, network quality or how often each SIM is used.
Higher is better. More subscriptions generally mean more people can reach calls, mobile money and online services, so a higher figure is better for this measure. Benin stood at 125.9 per 100 people in 2024, up from 116 a year earlier, a rise of 8.5%. That is the highest figure since 2015. The low for the same span was 72.9 per 100 people in 2017, so the rate has risen by a large margin since then.
Why it matters. A figure above 100 means the average Beninese resident has access to at least one SIM, and many people hold more than one. For households, that supports mobile payments, family contact and access to information. For firms and the state, it gives a wide base for digital services, though the count of SIMs does not show how many individuals are actually connected.
