In plain words
72.9 per 100 people
What it is. Mobile subscriptions count active SIM cards registered with operators, divided by the population and scaled to 100 people. Because one person can hold several SIMs, and many people in Chad switch between networks to get better coverage or cheaper rates, the figure can climb without every resident having a phone. Inactive lines, shared handsets and people with no connection at all all sit outside what the number shows directly.
Higher is better. More subscriptions mean more people can reach family, markets, mobile money and public information, so a higher figure is better. The latest reading is 72.9 per 100 people for 2024, up from 70.2 a year earlier, a rise of 3.9%. That is the highest level since 2015, the start of the window. The low point in the same span was 37 per 100 people in 2016, so the figure has nearly doubled since then.
Why it matters. At 72.9 per 100 people, mobile phones are within reach of a large share of Chadian households, which matters in a country where roads are poor and bank branches are few. Traders and small firms can take orders and payments by phone, and the state can send health and emergency messages to a wide audience. Because some people hold more than one SIM, access in rural areas is likely to be lower than the national figure suggests.
