In plain words

$1,658

What it is. GDP per capita divides the value of everything produced inside Benin in a year by the number of people living there, with output converted at that year's US dollar exchange rate. Because it uses current prices and market exchange rates, it moves with inflation and with the CFA franc's value against the dollar as well as with real output. It is an average, so it says nothing about how income is shared between Cotonou's traders and farmers in the north, and it leaves out unpaid household work and much informal activity that never reaches the national accounts.

Higher is better. A higher figure means more output for each resident, which gives households and the state more to spend, save and tax. The latest figure, for 2025, is $1,658, up from $1,485 a year earlier, a rise of 11.6%. That is also the highest level since 2016, when the series stood at its low of $1,011. Benin sits at the top of its own range for the period.

Why it matters. At $1,658 a person, the average Beninese economy produces roughly $173 more per head than a year earlier. For households that points to more room in the average budget, though the gain depends on how widely it is shared. For the state, a larger economy per head widens the base for tax revenue and for spending on roads, schools and the port of Cotonou.
