In plain words

$3,906

What it is. GDP per capita divides the value of everything an economy produces in a year by the number of people living in it, here expressed in current US dollars. Because it is converted at market exchange rates, it reflects the dollar value of output and not what a dollar buys locally. It is an average, so it says nothing about how income is spread between households. Djibouti's figure is also shaped by port and transit activity, which adds to output without necessarily reaching every resident.

Higher is better. A higher figure means more output for each resident, which usually goes with more room for wages, public services and investment. The latest figure for 2025 is $3,906, up from $3,553 a year earlier, a rise of 9.9%. That is the highest level since 2016, when the figure stood at $2,510, the low of the window. Djibouti therefore sits at the top of its own range since 2016.

Why it matters. For households, a higher average output gives more scope for incomes to rise, though the average does not show who gains. For firms, a larger economy per person points to a bigger domestic market for goods and services. For the state, more output per person widens the base for tax revenue and for spending on services and infrastructure.
