In plain words

$7,778

What it is. GDP per capita takes the value of everything an economy produces in a year, measured in current US dollars, and divides it by the number of people living there. The result is an average across the whole population, so it ignores how income is shared between households and leaves out unpaid work. Because it is in current dollars, exchange-rate moves and price changes shift the figure as well as real output.

Higher is better. A higher figure means more output for each person, which gives households, firms and the state more to earn, spend and tax. In 2025 the figure stood at $7,778, up from $7,650 a year earlier, a rise of 1.7%. Since 2016 the lowest level was $6,323 in 2020 and the highest was $8,329 in 2022. The latest figure sits well above that low and remains below the 2022 high.

Why it matters. At $7,778 per person, the average output behind Botswana's household incomes, business sales and tax revenue is higher than in 2020 and has yet to regain its 2022 level. The 1.7% gain adds modestly to the resources available per person. The next annual figure will show whether it moves back towards the 2022 high of $8,329.
