In plain words
$233.8
What it is. GDP per capita divides the value of everything a country produces in a year by its population, here in current US dollars. Because it is converted at market exchange rates, a weaker Burundian franc pulls the dollar figure down even when local output grows. It is an average, so it says nothing about how income is shared between farming households and the small urban economy.
Higher is better. A higher figure means more output per person, which gives room for higher incomes, spending and public services. The latest figure is $233.8 for 2025, up from $216.2 a year earlier, a rise of 8.1%. That earlier figure was the lowest in the window since 2016. The highest was $301.8 in 2022, so the current level remains well below that peak.
Why it matters. At $233.8 per person for the year, average output in Burundi is very small, which leaves little spare income for households after food and basic needs. The state has a narrow base to draw taxes from, which limits spending on health, schools and infrastructure. The recovery from $216.2 is welcome, though the level is still under the 2022 high of $301.8.
