In plain words

$932.7

What it is. GDP per capita divides the value of everything an economy produces in a year by its population, with the value converted into current US dollars. Because the conversion uses prevailing exchange rates, a weaker local currency lowers the figure even when the volume of goods and services is unchanged. It is an average, so it hides how income is shared between people, and it leaves out unpaid household work.

Higher is better. Higher is better because more output per person leaves more room for household incomes, business investment and public services. Ethiopia's latest figure is $932.7 for 2025, down from $1,134 a year earlier, a fall of 17.7%. Since 2016 the lowest reading was $641.7 in 2016 and the highest was $1,134 in 2024. The latest figure therefore sits well below the peak set a year earlier and still above the level at the start of the period.

Why it matters. A lower dollar figure means average output per Ethiopian is worth less when set against prices of goods bought abroad, such as fuel, fertiliser and machinery. Firms that import inputs or owe money in dollars face heavier costs relative to what they earn. The state has a smaller dollar economy from which to service external debt and fund public spending.
