In plain words

$1,124

What it is. GDP per capita divides the value of everything produced in Guinea-Bissau in a year by the number of people living there, using current US dollars. In an economy built around cashew exports, the figure moves with the harvest, world cashew prices and the exchange rate. It is an average, so it says nothing about how income is shared between households, and it leaves out unpaid work and much informal activity.

Higher is better. A higher figure means more output for each resident, which gives households and the state more to spend, save and tax. The latest figure is $1,124 for 2025, up from $998 a year earlier, a rise of 12.6%. That is the highest level since 2016, when the figure was $680, its lowest in the window. Output per person is therefore well above where it stood at the start of the period.

Why it matters. At $1,124 a head, average income in Guinea-Bissau remains small in absolute terms, so a bad cashew season or a price fall can quickly cut into household budgets. The $125 gain over the past year gives families and the government a little more room, but the average hides large gaps between Bissau and rural areas. For the state, a larger economy per head widens the tax base only if more of that activity is formal and can be taxed.
