In plain words

$2,363

What it is. GDP per capita takes the value of all goods and services produced in Kenya in a year and divides it by the number of people living there. It is then converted into US dollars at current exchange rates and prices. Because it is an average, a few very high incomes and many modest ones give the same result as an even spread. Unpaid household work is left out of the output total.

Higher is better. Higher is better because more output per person means more income that can be spent, saved or taxed. The latest figure, for 2025, is 2,363 USD, up from 2,133 USD a year earlier, a rise of 10.8%. Since 2016 the lowest value was 1,554 USD, recorded in 2016, and 2,363 USD is the highest in that span. Kenya's average output per person is therefore at a peak for the whole period.

Why it matters. A gain of 229 USD per person in a year gives the Kenyan state a larger economy to tax and gives firms a bigger domestic market when measured in dollars. Because the measure is in current dollars, movements in the shilling's exchange rate feed into it alongside real growth. Whether a household feels the improvement depends on how the gain is shared and on what everyday goods cost.
