What it is. GDP per capita divides the value of everything produced in Mozambique in a year by the number of people living there. It is measured in current US dollars, so a weaker local currency or changing prices can move it as well as real output. The figure is an average across all residents, so a few large projects or high earners can lift it while most households see little change. Unpaid household work and much informal activity are captured only in part.
Higher is better. A higher figure means more output per person, which leaves more room for incomes, spending and public services. The latest figure, for 2025, is $626.9, down from $657 a year earlier, a fall of 4.6%. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of $441.5 in 2016 to a high of $657 in 2024. The 2025 figure sits in the upper part of that range, just below the 2024 high.
Why it matters. At $626.9 per person for the year, average income in Mozambique is small in dollar terms, so households have little spare income beyond essentials. Fuel, food and machinery bought from abroad are typically priced in dollars, which makes a lower dollar figure harder on firms and families that buy them. For the state, a smaller income base per person limits what taxes can raise for health, schools and debt payments. The $657 reached in 2024 is the level to check the next annual reading against.
