What it is. GDP per capita divides the total value of everything produced in Namibia in a year by the number of people living there, with output valued in current US dollars. Because it is measured at current prices and exchange rates, it moves with the Namibian dollar's value against the US dollar as well as with real output. An average like this also hides how income is shared between households, and it leaves out unpaid work and informal activity that is not counted in output.
Higher is better. A higher figure means more output per person, which gives households, firms and the state more to spend, save and tax, so higher is better here. The latest figure is $4,876 for 2025, up from $4,502 a year earlier, a rise of 8.3%. Over the window since 2016, the low was $3,879 in 2020 and the high was $5,309 in 2018. The 2025 level therefore sits well above the 2020 trough and still below the 2018 peak.
Why it matters. At $4,876 per person, Namibia's average output is above its 2020 low but has not regained its 2018 level. For households, that means average incomes in dollar terms are recovering and have not yet passed where they stood in 2018. For the state, a larger economy per head widens the base from which tax revenue is drawn, while the gap to $5,309 shows how much ground is left to recover.
