In plain words

$775.4

What it is. GDP per capita divides the value of everything an economy produces in a year, at current prices and converted to US dollars, by the number of people living there. It is an average, so it shows nothing about how income is shared between households. Because it is measured in current dollars, it moves with price changes and with the exchange rate as well as with output. Unpaid household work is outside the total, and informal activity is counted only as far as national estimates capture it.

Higher is better. A higher figure means more output per person to share as income, spending and public services, which is why a rise is good news. Niger's latest figure is $775.4 for 2025, up from $729.9 a year earlier, a gain of $45.5 or 6.2%. Since 2016 the low was $499.9, recorded in 2016. The 2025 figure is the highest in that span.

Why it matters. An average output of $775.4 per person leaves households with modest resources for food, schooling and health care, so a gain of this size matters at the margin of daily budgets. For firms, a larger average income gives slightly more local spending power. For the state, output per head sets the size of the tax base available for services and debt payments. The next annual reading will show whether the rise from 2024 to 2025 continues.
