In plain words

$1,224

What it is. GDP per capita takes the value of all goods and services a country produces in a year, converted into US dollars at prevailing exchange rates, and divides it by the number of people. Because it uses current dollars, a change in the exchange rate moves the figure even when output at home is steady. It is an average, so it says nothing about how income is shared between richer and poorer households, and it leaves out unpaid work and much informal activity.

Higher is better. A higher figure means more output per person, which gives households more income to spend and the state a larger base to tax. The latest figure for 2025 is 1,224 USD, up from 1,084 USD a year earlier, a rise of 12.9%. Since 2016 the lowest point was 1,084 USD in 2024, so the current level sits just above the bottom of its range. The highest was 3,190 USD in 2019, and the latest figure remains well below that.

Why it matters. At 1,224 USD, average output per person in Nigeria is a fraction of what it was in 2019. Dollar-priced goods and imported inputs are harder for households and firms to afford when incomes are measured against that lower dollar value. The government also has a smaller dollar-measured economy to draw on when meeting foreign-currency obligations. The 2025 rise is the first sign of recovery from the 2024 low, and the next annual figure will show whether it continues.
