What it is. GDP per capita divides the value of everything a country produces in a year, at current prices, by its population, then converts the result to US dollars. Because it is an average, it carries no information on how income is shared between households. It also leaves out unpaid work such as farming for the family's own table, and because it uses current dollars, a shift in the exchange rate or in prices moves the figure even when output is unchanged.
Higher is better. A higher figure means more output per person, which gives households more income to spend and save and gives the state more to tax. Rwanda's latest figure is $1,124 for 2025, up from $1,060 a year earlier, a rise of 6%. Since 2016 the low was $721.3, recorded in 2016, and the high is the 2025 reading. The latest figure therefore sits at the top of its range for the period.
Why it matters. At $1,124 per person, average output in Rwanda remains small in absolute terms, so many households have little income beyond essentials such as food, housing and school fees. Firms selling to the domestic market face modest purchasing power per customer. The state works with a limited tax base per citizen, so each further rise in output per person adds directly to what it can fund.
