In plain words

$1,955

What it is. GDP per capita divides the value of everything produced inside Senegal in a year by the number of people living there. It is measured at current prices and converted to US dollars, so the figure moves with inflation and with the CFA franc's exchange rate against the dollar as well as with real output. It is an average across the whole population and leaves out how income is shared, what households keep after taxes, and much unrecorded informal work.

Higher is better. Higher is better here because more output per person leaves more room for household incomes, business investment and tax revenue. The latest figure, for 2025, is $1,955, up from $1,739 a year earlier. That is a rise of $216, or 12.4%. Since 2016 the lowest figure was $1,266 in 2016, and the 2025 figure is the highest in that span.

Why it matters. An average of $1,955 per person gives Senegal's households and its government a larger economic base than at any point since 2016. Because the measure is in current dollars, part of the rise can come from prices and the exchange rate, so wage and price data show how much of it reaches household budgets. For the state, a larger output per person widens the base for taxes, though the average says little about who earns the gain.
