In plain words
$846.3
What it is. GDP per capita divides the value of everything a country produces in a year by its population, here measured in current US dollars. Because it is converted at prevailing exchange rates, a weaker leone lowers the dollar figure even when output grows in local terms. It is an average, so it says nothing about how income is shared between households, and it leaves out unpaid work and much informal activity.
Higher is better. A higher figure means more output for each person, which gives a country more income to spend, save and tax. Sierra Leone's latest figure, for 2025, is $846.3, up from $806.7 a year earlier, a rise of 4.9%. Since 2016 the lowest point was $758.3 in 2023 and the highest was $885.4 in 2021. The current level therefore sits above the bottom of that range and below the 2021 peak.
Why it matters. At $846 a person, average annual output is small, so most households have little room to absorb higher food or fuel prices. A government working from an economy of this size collects limited tax revenue and has to stretch it across health, schools and roads. Regaining the 2021 level of $885 would still leave output per person at a modest level.
