In plain words

$1,319

What it is. GDP per capita divides the value of everything an economy produces in a year by its population, expressed in current US dollars. Because it uses current prices and market exchange rates, the figure moves with the Tanzanian shilling against the dollar as well as with real output. It is an average, so it says nothing about how income is shared between farmers, traders and salaried workers, and it leaves out unpaid household work.

Higher is better. A higher figure means more output for each person to share, which usually allows more spending on food, schooling and health. Tanzania's latest figure is $1,319 for 2025, up from $1,193 a year earlier, a rise of 10.6%. That is the highest level since 2016, when the series stood at its lowest point of $953. The current reading therefore sits at the top of its range for the whole period since 2016.

Why it matters. An average output of $1,319 per person is still modest, so most households budget tightly around food, transport and school costs. A rise of $126 in a year gives room for gradual gains in purchasing power, though this depends on prices and the exchange rate. For the state, a larger economy per head widens the base for tax collection and for funding services to a growing population.
