In plain words

$1,206

What it is. GDP per capita divides the value of everything a country produces in a year by its population, here measured in current US dollars. Because it is an average, it says nothing about how income is spread between richer and poorer households. Using current dollars means exchange rate movements between the Ugandan shilling and the dollar affect the figure as well as real growth.

Higher is better. A higher figure means more output per person, which usually goes with more room for incomes, public services and investment to grow. Uganda's latest figure is $1,206 for 2025, up from $1,078 a year earlier, a rise of 11.9%. That is the highest level since 2016 and sits well above the window low of $753 recorded in January 2016.

Why it matters. At $1,206 a head, the average Ugandan economy is producing more than at any point in the last decade, which gives households and firms a larger pool of income to draw on. For the state, a larger economy per person widens the tax base it can draw on to fund roads, schools and health care. Because the figure is an average in dollars, the gain reaches individual households unevenly and can shift with the exchange rate.
