In plain words

63.9% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up the value of everything residents buy from abroad, both physical goods and services such as transport, travel and finance, and divides it by the size of the economy. It comes from the national accounts, so it follows the same yearly cycle as GDP. The share rises when a country relies on foreign supply, for instance for machinery during an investment drive, and it falls when domestic output or domestic spending takes over.

Neither way is good in itself. A high share can mean an open economy that draws in equipment and inputs, and a low share can mean either strong local production or weak demand, so the direction alone settles nothing. The latest figure, for 2025, is 63.9% of GDP, down 3 percentage points from 66.9% a year earlier. Since 2016 the lowest reading was 43.2% of GDP in 2020 and the highest was 66.9% in 2024. The 2025 figure therefore sits close to the top of its range, just below the 2024 peak.

Why it matters. At this level, a large part of what Namibian households consume and what firms use to invest is bought from abroad. Prices of imported goods and the exchange rate therefore feed quickly into living costs and business budgets. The state also depends on foreign supply for much of the equipment behind its projects, so its spending plans are tied to conditions in other countries.
