In plain words
8.3% y/y
What it is. Headline inflation tracks the price of a broad basket of goods and services bought by households and compares it with the same month a year earlier. Because every item is included, swings in volatile categories such as food and fuel move the headline figure directly. A single national average also cannot match the experience of any one household, whose own spending mix may differ from the basket.
Lower is better. Lower inflation is better because prices rise more slowly, so wages, pensions and savings keep their buying power and households and firms can plan with more confidence. The latest figure is 8.3% y/y for August 2026, up from −1.2% y/y a year earlier, a swing of 9.5 percentage points. Since Sep 2024 the series has ranged from a low of −2% y/y in September 2025 to a high of 8.6% y/y in May 2026. The latest reading therefore sits close to the top of that range, just under the peak.
Why it matters. With prices rising at 8.3% y/y, household incomes that do not keep pace buy less each month, and savings held in cash lose value. A year earlier prices were falling slightly, so the change in conditions is sharp. Firms face a faster-moving cost base when setting prices and wages. The state faces higher costs for public wages and for any price support it provides.
