In plain words
−2% y/y
What it is. This is the change in a consumer price index covering all items, compared with the same month a year earlier. The index prices a fixed basket of goods and services that households buy, so it shows the average movement in everyday living costs. It leaves out asset prices and wages, and one national average hides differences between households and regions.
Lower is better. Lower is better because slower price rises protect what a household's income can buy and make costs easier to plan for. The latest figure, for July 2026, is −2% y/y, up 4.4 percentage points from −6.4% y/y a year earlier, so the direction over the past year is upward. Since Aug 2024 the series has ranged from a low of −6.4% y/y in July 2025 to a high of 8.7% y/y in August 2024. The latest reading sits in the lower part of that range, much nearer the low than the high.
Why it matters. With prices on average below their level of a year earlier, households in Chad pay slightly less for the same basket than in July 2025. Firms selling goods receive lower prices, which squeezes margins when wages and loan repayments are fixed in money terms. The state sees sales-based tax receipts grow more slowly when prices fall.
