In plain words
7.5% y/y
What it is. Headline inflation tracks the price of a basket of goods and services that households buy, and reports how much the cost of that basket has changed against the same month a year earlier. It is an average across all items, so a household that spends mostly on food or fuel can face a different rate from the headline figure. It covers consumer prices only and leaves out wages, asset prices and the cost of goods bought by firms.
Lower is better. Lower is better because slower price rises protect what wages, savings and pensions can buy, and make costs easier to plan. Inflation in Burundi was 7.5% y/y in Sep 2026, against 29.7% a year earlier, a fall of 22.1 percentage points. Since Oct 2024 the rate peaked at 45.5% y/y in Apr 2025. The latest reading is the lowest in that span, at 7.5% y/y.
Why it matters. For households, prices are now rising far more slowly than a year ago, so wages and savings lose value at a much gentler pace and weekly spending on food and transport is steadier. Traders and firms can set prices and agree supply contracts with less need to build in a cushion for sudden cost jumps. For the state, a rate of 7.5% y/y eases pressure on public wages and on the purchasing power of its tax receipts.
