In plain words
7.6% of GDP
What it is. This measure divides the taxes collected by Angola's central government by the value of everything the economy produces in a year. It covers taxes on income and profits, on goods and services and on trade. Grants, other non-tax income and anything raised by local authorities fall outside it. Because GDP is the denominator, the ratio moves with the size of the economy as well as with collection, so a swing in oil prices or output can shift it even when tax rules are unchanged.
Higher is better. A higher share means more of the country's output reaches the state as tax, which pays for public services and lowers the need to borrow. The latest figure, for 2024, is 7.6% of GDP, down from 9% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 1.4 percentage points. That is the lowest reading since 2015. The high over the same span was 20.6% of GDP in 2020, so the latest figure is well under half of the peak.
Why it matters. At 7.6% of GDP, the state collects little tax relative to the size of the economy. That leaves less to spend on schools, clinics and roads and less to service public debt without further borrowing. Firms and households that depend on government spending or contracts are exposed when revenue is this thin.
