In plain words
12.4% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the taxes collected by Ghana's central government, such as taxes on income, goods and trade, and divides the total by the size of the economy. Expressing it as a share of GDP lets years be compared as the economy grows and prices rise. Grants and other non-tax income are left out, and so are taxes collected by local authorities.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because the state then funds schools, clinics, roads and debt payments from its own revenue and has less need to borrow. The latest figure is 12.4% of GDP for 2023, up 0.1 percentage points from 12.3% of GDP a year earlier. Since 2014 the low was 11.1% of GDP in 2016. The 2023 figure matches the highest in that span, so the measure sits at the top of its range.
Why it matters. At 12.4% of GDP, central government tax collection is at its strongest since 2014, which gives the Ghanaian state somewhat more of its own money for public services and for paying down debt. Households and firms bear a tax take that has crept up only slightly over the last year. The 2023 figure is the one to compare against the next annual release to see whether collection keeps pace with the economy.
