In plain words
10.7% of GDP
What it is. Tax revenue measures what the central government collects in taxes, such as levies on income, profits, goods and trade, and expresses it as a share of the country's GDP. Dividing by GDP lets the figure be compared across years and countries of different sizes. It covers central government only, so provincial and local levies are outside it, and so are non-tax receipts like mining royalties that may be classed separately.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because it gives the state more of its own money to pay for services and investment without relying on borrowing or aid. The latest figure, for 2022, is 10.7% of GDP, up from 7.9% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 2.8 percentage points. That is the highest level since 2013, the start of the window. The low over the same span was 6.7% of GDP in 2017, so the latest reading sits at the top of its range and well above the bottom.
Why it matters. At 10.7% of GDP, the government has more room to fund roads, schools, health and security from domestic revenue than it did in 2017. For households and firms, a rising share can mean more tax paid as collection widens or the economy grows. The 2022 level is a single year's reading, so the next annual figure will show whether the gain holds.
