In plain words

8.3% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up the taxes collected by the central government, such as levies on income, on goods and services and on trade, and divides the total by the size of the economy. It shows how much of national output reaches the state through taxation. Grants, other non-tax income, local government revenue and activity that goes untaxed in the informal economy do not enter the figure.

Higher is better. A higher share gives the government more of its own money to pay for services and wages, so it depends less on borrowing and outside support. The latest figure, for 2024, is 8.3% of GDP, down from 8.9% a year earlier, a fall of 0.55 percentage points. Since 2017 the range runs from a low of 6.9% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 9.5% of GDP in 2017. The current level sits well above the 2020 low and still below the 2017 peak.

Why it matters. At 8.3% of GDP, the state has a small pool of its own revenue to cover public salaries, schools, health care and roads. A fall from the previous year leaves less room for that spending and keeps pressure on the government to rely on external financing. Households feel this through the thin reach of public services, and firms through limited public investment in infrastructure.
