In plain words
64.1% of population
What it is. Urban population is the share of all residents who live in areas classed as urban. It is usually built from census counts and projections, and each country sets its own definition of what counts as a town or city. The measure follows where people live. It says nothing about incomes, housing quality or jobs in those urban areas.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher or lower share can each have a benign cause. A rising share can follow job growth in cities, and a falling one can follow growth in rural towns or farming, so the figure describes settlement patterns and carries no verdict. The latest figure, for 2025, is 64.1% of population, up from 63.9% a year earlier, a rise of 0.24 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 63.3% of population in 2016 to a high of 64.1% of population in 2025, so the latest reading sits at the top of its range for that period.
Why it matters. Most people in the Republic of the Congo live in urban areas, so demand for housing, water, electricity and transport is concentrated in cities. Firms find their main customers and labour there, and the state must plan its services around urban needs. Because the share moves by small steps, the pressure on city services builds gradually, and the next annual reading after 2025 will show whether the climb continues.
