In plain words
172.7 per 100 people
What it is. Mobile subscriptions count active SIM-based cellular accounts for every 100 residents, taken from operator and regulator records. A person with two SIMs, or a business with a fleet of phones, adds several subscriptions, so the figure can climb well above 100. It shows how widely mobile connections are held. It does not show how many individuals use a phone or how much data they consume.
Higher is better. More subscriptions generally mean more people and devices can reach voice, messaging and mobile internet, so a higher figure is better. Mauritius stands at 172.7 per 100 people in 2024, up from 165.3 per 100 people a year earlier, a rise of 4.5%. That is the highest level since 2015, when the series started from its lowest point of 136.4 per 100 people. The figure has therefore risen over the whole span and is now at the top of its own range.
Why it matters. With 172.7 per 100 people, there are well over one subscription for every resident, so most households hold more than one connection. Firms can reach customers and run payments, deliveries and bookings by phone across the island. Telecom operators face a market where growth has to come from extra SIMs and data use, since nearly every resident already holds a connection.
