In plain words

19.6% of GDP

What it is. Credit to the private sector adds up the loans and similar claims that banks and other financial institutions hold on households and private firms, then divides the total by GDP. The ratio shows how much borrowing sits behind a year of national output. It moves with lending and with the size of the economy, so faster GDP growth can lower it even when lending rises. Credit to government and funding raised outside the financial system fall outside it.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher ratio can mean deeper finance that supports investment or heavier debt that leaves borrowers exposed, and a lower one can mean cautious lending or thin access to loans. The latest figure, for 2025, is 19.6% of GDP, up from 19% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 0.56 percentage points. Since 2016 the ratio has ranged from a low of 18.2% of GDP in 2022 to a high of 26.1% of GDP in 2020. The 2025 reading sits much nearer the bottom of that range than the top.

Why it matters. At 19.6% of GDP, bank credit to private borrowers in Algeria is well below its 2020 level of 26.1% of GDP. Households and private firms have less bank financing relative to the size of the economy than they had then. A firm planning to expand may need to lean more on its own earnings or on other sources of funds. Banks could lend more if demand and credit quality allow.
