In plain words

15.3% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up the loans, trade credits and other claims that domestic banks and other financial institutions hold on private firms and households, then divides the total by a year of national output. It shows how much of the economy runs on borrowed money from the formal financial system. Lending from foreign lenders and informal lending between individuals fall outside it.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher share means more investment and spending is financed by credit, which can speed growth and also adds repayment risk. A lower share means less debt but possibly thinner finance for firms. The latest figure is 15.3% of GDP for 2024, down from 16.6% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 1.3 percentage points. Since 2015 the range runs from a low of 15% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 16.6% of GDP in 2023, so the 2024 reading sits close to the bottom of that range.

Why it matters. At 15.3% of GDP, formal private borrowing is a small part of the Comoros economy. Many households and small firms therefore fund spending and investment from their own income, savings and informal sources. The drop from the 2023 high means formal credit grew more slowly than the economy, or shrank, over the latest year.
