In plain words
22.7% of GDP
What it is. Credit to the private sector adds up the loans and similar claims that banks and other financial institutions hold against households and companies, then divides the total by GDP. It shows how far the formal financial system funds private activity relative to the size of the economy. Lending to the government and state bodies is outside it, and so is informal borrowing between individuals. The ratio can also move when GDP changes, even if lending stays put.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher ratio can mean deeper finance and more funding for firms, while a lower one can mean cautious borrowing or tight access to loans, so the cause of a move decides whether it is healthy or risky. The latest figure, 22.7% of GDP in 2025, is down from 27.1% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 4.4 percentage points. It is the lowest reading since 2016. The peak in that span was 31.9% of GDP in 2023.
Why it matters. At 22.7% of GDP, bank and institutional lending to private borrowers in Burkina Faso is a smaller share of the economy than it was in 2023. Businesses looking for working capital or money to invest may find less formal credit on offer, and households may have less access to loans for housing or consumption. Readers can check the next annual reading to see whether the ratio keeps falling from its 2023 high or levels off.
