In plain words
6.6% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the loans and similar financing that domestic banks and other financial institutions extend to private firms and households, then divides the total by annual GDP. It shows how much of the economy's output is matched by borrowing from local lenders. Lending to government and borrowing from abroad or through bond markets sit outside it. It gives no breakdown of who borrows or for what.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher share means local lenders finance more private activity, which can fund investment and can also build up debts that are hard to repay. A lower share means less borrowing, which can reflect cautious lenders and borrowers or a thin banking system. The latest figure, 6.6% of GDP in January 2025, is down from 7.2% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 0.59 percentage points. It is the lowest level since 2016, when the share stood at 18.3% of GDP.
Why it matters. At 6.6% of GDP, bank credit to the private sector is small relative to the size of Angola's economy. Firms that want to expand, buy equipment or cover running costs have little domestic lending to draw on, and households have limited access to loans. The fall since 2016 also means private spending depends less on local credit and more on firms' own cash and other sources of money.
