In plain words
25.8% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the loans and other financial claims that banks and other lenders hold on private firms and households, then divides the total by the size of the economy. It shows how much of a year's national output is matched by borrowed money in private hands. Lending to the government and informal borrowing from family or moneylenders fall outside it.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can mean a deeper financial system that funds investment and spending, or heavier private debt. A lower share can reflect cautious lenders or weak appetite for borrowing, so the direction needs the circumstances behind it. Egypt's latest figure is 25.8% of GDP for 2025, down from 27.6% of GDP a year earlier. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of 22.8% of GDP in 2019 to a high of 34.1% of GDP in 2016. The latest reading sits in the lower part of that range, closer to the 2019 low than to the 2016 high.
Why it matters. At 25.8% of GDP, bank and other private lending in Egypt is a smaller part of the economy than in 2016, when it stood at 34.1% of GDP. Firms that want to expand find that borrowed money funds a smaller share of activity, and households carry less credit relative to national output. The 2019 low of 22.8% of GDP is the nearest reference for how much further the ratio has fallen before.
