In plain words
25.2% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the loans, purchased securities, trade credits and other receivables that banks and other financial institutions hold against private companies and households, then divides the total by the size of the economy. It shows how heavily the private sector relies on borrowing from domestic lenders. Lending by foreign banks, informal credit between individuals and any money raised on overseas markets sit outside it.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can mean deeper finance and more funding for firms, and it can also mean debts are building faster than incomes, so the direction carries no verdict by itself. The latest figure, 25.2% of GDP for 2025, is up from 23.1% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 2.1 percentage points. Since 2016 the lowest reading was 18.6% of GDP in 2021, and the highest is the current 25.2% of GDP. Private credit has therefore climbed from that low point to the top of its own range in four years.
Why it matters. At about a quarter of GDP, private borrowing in Djibouti is larger relative to the economy than at any point since 2016. Firms and households have more domestic lending available to them than they did in 2021, which can support investment and purchases. A quicker rise also leaves banks and borrowers more exposed if repayments become harder, so the next annual reading will show whether the climb continues.
