In plain words
54% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the loans and other credit that banks and other financial institutions extend to households and private firms in Cabo Verde, then divides the total by a year's economic output. Lending to the government sits outside it. Because output is the denominator, the ratio can rise when GDP shrinks as well as when lending grows.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher ratio can mean a deeper financial system that funds investment, or a heavier debt load on borrowers. A lower ratio can mean cautious lending, or limited access to finance. The latest figure, for 2025, is 54% of GDP, down from 54.6% of GDP a year earlier, a change of 0.57 percentage points. Since 2016 the ratio has ranged from a low of 51.6% of GDP in 2019 to a high of 68.5% of GDP in 2020. The 2025 reading sits closer to the bottom of that range than to the top.
Why it matters. Private credit at 54% of GDP means households and firms in Cabo Verde carry borrowing worth a little over half of national output, through products such as home loans and business finance. Firms rely on that credit to fund stock, equipment and expansion. Banks and the state watch the level because it shows how much of the economy depends on bank lending and how much repayment pressure sits with borrowers.
