In plain words

5.8% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up the loans and similar claims that domestic banks and other financial institutions hold against private firms and households, then divides the total by the size of the economy. The ratio can fall because lending shrinks or because GDP grows faster than lending. Credit from foreign lenders and informal borrowing falls outside the total.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher ratio means firms and families have more access to finance, and it also means more debt that has to be repaid. A lower ratio means less borrowing and less exposure to a credit squeeze, and it can also mean fewer funds for new business. The latest figure is 5.8% of GDP for 2023, down from 8.1% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 2.3 percentage points. It is the lowest level since 2014, and it sits well below the peak of 15.2% of GDP reached in 2019.

Why it matters. At 5.8% of GDP, bank lending to the private sector is small relative to the economy. Firms looking to start or expand a business have little domestic credit to draw on, and households have limited access to loans for housing or consumption. The shrinking ratio since 2019 means private demand is leaning less on bank finance, so the next readings will show whether lending recovers from this low.
