In plain words
10.6% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the loans and other claims that banks and similar financial institutions hold on households and private firms, then divides the total by the size of the economy. It shows how much of national output is matched by borrowing from the formal financial system. Lending to government is excluded, and so is money that firms and families raise from informal lenders or from their own savings.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher ratio means the formal financial system is funding more private activity, which can support investment, while a ratio that climbs quickly can leave borrowers stretched. A lower ratio means less formal financing is reaching firms and households. In Guinea the latest figure is 10.6% of GDP for 2025, a small slip of 0.09 percentage points from 10.7% of GDP a year earlier. Since 2016 the range has run from a low of 9% of GDP in 2021 to a high of 10.8% of GDP in 2016, so the current level sits close to the top of that range.
Why it matters. At about a tenth of GDP, formal credit covers only a small part of what Guinean households and businesses need to finance. Many firms therefore depend on retained earnings, family funds or informal lenders to buy stock, equipment or premises. The ratio has stayed in a narrow band for close to a decade, so the 2025 reading is the figure to compare against when judging whether bank lending to private borrowers is deepening.
