In plain words
72% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the loans and similar claims that banks and other financial institutions hold on households and firms in Mauritius, then divides the total by the size of the economy. It shows how heavily the country's private sector relies on borrowing from domestic lenders. Lending to the government is left out of the total.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher ratio can mean a deeper financial system that funds homes and businesses, and it can also mean heavier debt. A lower ratio can mean cautious borrowers or limited access to loans. The latest figure is 72% of GDP for January 2025, up from 69.9% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 2.2 percentage points. Since 2016 the ratio has ranged from a low of 69.9% of GDP in 2024 to a high of 97.7% of GDP in 2017, so the current reading sits close to the bottom of that range.
Why it matters. Private credit worth 72% of GDP means loans for housing, vehicles and business investment still carry real weight in the Mauritian economy. Changes in interest rates therefore reach many households and firms through their repayments. The rise over the last year shows lending growing slightly faster than the economy, which gives firms more room to borrow for expansion.
