In plain words
18.3% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the loans and other financial claims that banks and similar institutions hold on households and firms, then divides the total by a year of national output. The result shows how much of the economy's activity is matched by lending to private borrowers. It covers formal domestic finance, so informal lending, borrowing abroad by firms and money raised through shares sit outside it.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher ratio can mean deeper financial services or heavier private debt, and a lower one can mean cautious lenders or a shortage of loans, so the direction alone settles little. The latest figure is 18.3% of GDP for 2025, up from 17.6% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 0.65 percentage points. Since 2016 the ratio has ranged from 31.2% of GDP in 2016 down to 17.6% of GDP in 2024. The current reading therefore sits close to the bottom of that range, just above the 2024 low.
Why it matters. At 18.3% of GDP, private borrowing in Mozambique supports a much smaller share of the economy than the 31.2% of GDP recorded in 2016. Firms have less bank finance for equipment, stock and expansion, and households have less access to loans for homes, vehicles or school fees. The small rise since 2024 is the first step to check in later releases.
