In plain words
9.6% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the loans and similar financing that banks and other financial institutions extend to firms and households, then divides the total by GDP. Dividing by GDP makes the figure a gauge of how deep formal finance is relative to the size of the economy. Credit to government, informal lending between relatives or traders, and borrowing by firms directly from abroad all sit outside it.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher ratio means more bank financing for the economy's size, which can fund investment and also leave borrowers with heavier debts. A lower ratio means less leverage and also less funding for firms. The ratio stood at 9.6% of GDP in 2025, down from 10.3% a year earlier, a fall of 0.71 percentage points. That is the lowest reading since 2016. The high over the same span was 13% of GDP in 2021.
Why it matters. At 9.6% of GDP, formal credit in Niger is a small part of the economy, so many businesses rely on their own savings, family money or trade credit to grow. Households have limited access to bank loans for housing or consumption. The decline since 2021 means the banking system has been extending less financing relative to the size of the economy.
