In plain words
30.9% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the loans and similar claims that banks and other financial institutions hold on Senegalese households and private firms, then divides the total by a year of national output. It shows how much of the economy runs on borrowed money from the domestic financial system. Because GDP is the divisor, the ratio rises when credit grows faster than the economy. Lending from abroad, credit to the government and informal borrowing between individuals fall outside it.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher share means more finance is available for firms to invest and for households to buy homes or goods, and it also means more debt to service. A lower share means less of both, so the measure carries no good or bad direction of its own. The latest figure is 30.9% of GDP for 2025, up 1.1 percentage points from 29.8% of GDP a year earlier. Since 2016 the range runs from 27.8% of GDP in 2016 to 32.2% of GDP in 2022, so the current reading sits in the upper part of that range and below the 2022 peak.
Why it matters. Private credit worth 30.9% of GDP means lenders hold a sizeable stock of claims on Senegalese businesses and families, and repayments take a corresponding share of their income. The rise over the last year suggests borrowing has been growing a little faster than the economy. The next annual reading will show whether the ratio moves back towards the 2022 high of 32.2% of GDP.
