In plain words

5.6% of GDP

What it is. Credit to the private sector adds up the money that banks and other financial institutions have lent to firms and households, then divides it by the size of the economy. Lending to government is not part of it. Because GDP is the divisor, the ratio can fall when lending slows or when the economy's output grows faster than loans. It gives a view of how far the financial system funds private activity.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher share means private borrowers draw more finance from the financial system, which can support investment and spending but also builds up debt. A lower share can reflect cautious lenders or weak demand for loans, and it can also mean less household and business debt. The latest figure is 5.6% of GDP for 2022, down from 6.6% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 0.98 percentage points. It is the lowest level since 2013, and it compares with a high of 10.5% of GDP in January 2013.

Why it matters. At 5.6% of GDP, bank lending to Sudanese firms and households is small relative to the economy and well below its level in 2013. A business that wants to expand has less outside finance to draw on than it would have had then, and a household has a smaller supply of loans for a home or a purchase. For the state, a thin credit base leaves private investment more dependent on firms' own funds.
