In plain words

57.7% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up the loans and other financial claims that banks and similar institutions hold on private companies and households in Tunisia, then divides the total by a year of national output. It is a stock of outstanding credit, so it moves with new lending, repayments and write-offs, and also with the size of GDP. Government borrowing, share issuance and informal lending between individuals fall outside it.

Neither way is good in itself. A high ratio can mean a deep financial system that funds firms and families, or a economy carrying a lot of private debt. A low ratio can mean careful borrowing, or firms and households struggling to get loans. For that reason the direction carries no verdict until it is set beside what else is happening in the economy. The latest figure is 57.7% of GDP for 2025, down 2.9 percentage points from 60.6% of GDP a year earlier. It is the lowest reading since 2016, the start of the window, and well below the high of 67.7% of GDP in 2020.

Why it matters. At 57.7% of GDP, private borrowing in Tunisia is smaller relative to the economy than it was in 2020. Credit has grown more slowly than output, or has shrunk, so businesses and households have drawn less on bank funding for investment and purchases than the size of the economy would have allowed. The next annual reading will show whether the ratio levels off or keeps falling.
