In plain words
14.3% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the loans and other financial claims that banks and other domestic financial institutions hold on private firms and households, then divides the total by the size of the economy. Dividing by GDP lets readers compare lending across years as the economy grows. It covers credit from the domestic financial system only. Borrowing from informal lenders, and money that firms raise abroad, falls outside it.
Neither way is good in itself. Neither direction is good in itself because a higher share can mean banks are funding investment and household purchases, or that borrowers are taking on more debt than they can carry. A lower share can mean cautious lending, or weak demand for loans. In 2024 the figure was 14.3% of GDP, down 0.51 percentage points from 14.8% of GDP a year earlier. Since 2015 the range has run from 13.5% of GDP in 2017 to 15.1% of GDP in 2022, so the latest reading sits roughly midway between the two.
Why it matters. A private credit share in the mid teens means most Ugandan firms and households fund themselves from their own savings and earnings, and bank loans reach a limited part of the economy. The dip from 2023 means lending grew more slowly than output, so a small business or farmer seeking a loan found little extra room for it. The 2022 peak of 15.1% of GDP shows how far the share has recently moved.
