In plain words
4.4% y/y
What it is. This measure tracks the price of a fixed basket of goods and services that households buy, with each item weighted by its share of spending. Each month is compared with the same month a year earlier, so a one-off price jump stays in the figure for a full year before it drops out. It covers consumer purchases only. Asset prices, wages and the spending patterns of any one household sit outside it.
Lower is better. Slower price rises protect the buying power of wages, pensions and savings, so a lower reading is better. Inflation in Aug 2026 was 4.4% y/y, up from 1.6% a year earlier, a rise of 2.8 percentage points. Since Sep 2024 the series has ranged from a low of −1.2% y/y in Nov 2025, when prices were below their level of a year before, to a high of 6.9% y/y in Jul 2026. The latest figure has eased from that July peak and still sits in the upper part of the range.
Why it matters. Households in the Republic of the Congo are paying noticeably more for everyday purchases than they were a year ago, and incomes that have not been raised lose ground at this pace. Firms face higher input costs and must decide whether to pass them on or absorb them. For the state, wage bills, pensions and budget lines fixed in francs buy less than planned. The next monthly reading will show whether the easing from the July high continues.
