In plain words
1.6% y/y
What it is. Headline inflation tracks the price of a fixed basket of goods and services bought by households, compared with the same month a year earlier. The basket is priced regularly and each item is weighted by its share of typical household spending, so food and housing costs count for more than items families buy rarely. It covers consumer prices only and leaves out asset prices such as land and property. The result is a national average that can differ from the experience of any one household.
Lower is better. Lower inflation is better because it protects the purchasing power of wages and savings and makes costs easier to plan. Gabon's latest figure, for December 2025, is 1.6% y/y, up from 0.89% y/y a year earlier, a rise of 0.71 percentage points. Since Jan 2024 the range runs from a low of 0.36% y/y in September 2024 to a high of 2.3% y/y in July 2025. The latest reading sits in the upper half of that range, below the July 2025 peak and above the September 2024 low.
Why it matters. At 1.6% y/y, prices in Gabon are rising slowly, so a household's income buys only slightly less than it did a year earlier. The pace is faster than in December 2024, so shoppers are likely to notice food and household bills creeping up again. Firms setting prices and wages will watch whether the rate drifts back towards the 2.3% y/y reached in July 2025.
