In plain words
7% y/y
What it is. Headline inflation tracks the price of a fixed basket of goods and services bought by households in The Gambia, such as food, housing costs, transport and clothing. Statisticians collect prices for the items in the basket, weight each by its share of typical household spending, and compare the total with the same month a year earlier. The result is an average across all households, so a family that spends more on food or fuel than the typical weighting can face a different rate of price rise. Asset prices such as land and shares sit outside the basket.
Lower is better. Lower is better because slower price rises protect what wages, savings and pensions can buy and make it easier for families and firms to plan. In October 2025 inflation stood at 7% y/y, down from 10% y/y a year earlier, a fall of 3 percentage points. That is the lowest reading since Nov 2023, the start of the window. In November 2023 the rate was 18.4% y/y, so prices were then rising at well over twice today's pace.
Why it matters. Prices are still rising at 7% y/y, so households whose incomes grow more slowly than that lose buying power, and families who spend most of their income on food and other basics feel it first. Businesses face a steadier cost environment than in late 2023, which helps them set prices and wages with more confidence. For the state, a lower rate eases pressure to raise public pay and support to keep up with living costs.
