What it is. Headline inflation tracks the price of a fixed basket of goods and services that Ghanaian households buy, from food and transport to rent and clothing. Each month's index is compared with the same month a year earlier, which removes seasonal swings but means a large price jump drops out of the figure twelve months later. The all-items measure follows an average household basket, so families who spend more on food or fuel than average can feel price changes differently. It also leaves out purchases of assets such as land.
Lower is better. Falling prices growth protects the buying power of wages and savings, so a lower reading is better for this measure. The latest figure is 5.2% y/y for Sep 2026, down from 9.4% y/y in Sep 2025, a drop of 4.2 percentage points over the year. Since Oct 2024 the series has ranged from a high of 23.8% y/y in Dec 2024 to a low of 3.2% y/y in Mar 2026. The current reading sits much closer to that low than to the peak, though it is above the Mar 2026 trough.
Why it matters. At this level, prices for everyday goods in Ghana are rising far more slowly than at the end of 2024, so wages and savings lose less value each month. Firms can set prices and plan purchases with less allowance for sudden cost increases. The government and the central bank face less pressure to keep borrowing costs high, and the Mar 2026 low shows the pace of price rises has been lower within the past year.
